AM CALLS TIME ON SEPTIC TANK REGISTRATION
AM Griffiths has called for owners of septic tanks to be aware of the need to register their tanks by the end of the year.
As part of new environmental regulations introduced in 2010, owners of septic tanks will be legally required to register by the 31st December 2011.
The move, brought in by the Department of Environment, will see owners of septic tanks across England and Wales notified of the need to register this week.
Poorly maintained septic tanks are contributing to poor water quality in rivers, lakes and coastal waters. There is also a danger that pollution from septic tanks could contaminate private water supplies from wells, boreholes and springs.
By knowing the location of septic tanks, the Environment Agency plans to check on any poorly maintained tanks that could be a cause of pollution.
People need to register by 31 December 2011 by Law, but in practice, the Environment Agency will not consider taking enforcement action against those who have not registered until after 30 June 2012.
Lesley Griffiths said:
“It is important that the people of Wrexham are aware that is to become a legal requirement to register their tanks, to avoid getting caught out.
“For the majority of people this process will be free, one off and simple to do. However, this is an important change in order to prevent environmental damage caused by tanks which are in a bad state of repair and can leak in to the water supply. “
“If anyone in Wrexham has a septic tank and wishes to register then call the environment Agency on 03708506506.”
