School leavers from across Chester are being given the chance to take part in a pioneering new project which aims to get young people involved in their local communities.
The ‘Summer of a Lifetime’ programme aims to provide 16-year olds with the opportunity to take part in a host of activities and projects, including a two week residential programme where they will take part in a packed schedule of adventure and personal development activities.
The residential weeks are followed by a two week community element, where young people will develop social action projects to benefit their area.
The ‘Summer of a Lifetime’ project is part of the Government’s flagship youth initiative, the National Citizen Service (NCS). 8,400 young people took part in last year’s highly successful pilots, including here in Chester, and in 2012 NCS will offer 30,000 young people the fantastic opportunity to take part.
Speaking about the project, Chester MP Stephen Mosley said:
“This is an incredible opportunity for 16-year-olds to take part in a really exciting new programme, which will not only give them a summer of exciting activities and challenges, but will also provide them with a breadth of skills and knowledge to equip them for further education, work or training.
“I was fortunate enough to meet some of the students who took part in last year’s project, each of whom seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and benefited greatly from the programme.
“I would encourage everyone who is currently working towards their GCSEs to apply for the programme and to enjoy a summer’s reward for all their hard work.”
