 MPs, Andrew Miller and Alison McGovern called together local scientists and science-based businesses.  Wirral South MP Alison McGovern invited the Ellesmere Port MP to meet with scientists from industry and academia, to explain how science interacts with Parliament and Government.

The two constituencies of Ellesmere Port & Neston and Wirral South include many science based industries and they make a huge contribution towards the UK’s economy.

Andrew Miller MP, who chairs both the Parliamentary and Science & Technology Select Committee and the Parliamentary Science Committee, was the main speaker at the event.  He provided an insight into the work of two important parliamentary committees.   The event also provided an opportunity for members of Wirral’s science community to discus items of mutual interest and to put questions to their local political representatives.

Alison McGovern said: “Science plays a significant part in our local economy. From huge international brands such as Unilever in Port Sunlight and their world renowned R&D labs, to smaller companies based in business parks such as the Croft Business Park in Bromborough.”

“Government needs to invest in science, as this is the sector that will provide our future jobs. Last year the Conservative-led Government cut £1.4 billion in capital spending for science facilities. This is a false economy. It must do more to support scientific research, and science led businesses if it wants to see growth in our economy.”
