NORTH Wales Assembly Member, Mark Isherwood, has praised  Llangollen Railway Trust for completing the first stage of the railway extension to Plas Bonwm and is urging people to support one of its schemes to raise funds towards the next stage of works.

Mr Isherwood said: “It was magnificent and moving to be a guest last month of Llangollen Railway on the first train to travel west of Carrog for nearly 50 years, approximately half way to recreating the rail link between Llangollen and Corwen. This big volunteer effort deserves huge praise.

“Several thousand visitors sampled the first stage of the extension to Plas Bonwm during the mega steam gala Steam, Steel and Stars 3 last month. The achievement in laying 1500 m of track between January and April to open it in time for the gala gained praise from those who visited the railway.

“Llangollen Railway is not only a wonderful heritage tourism attraction and stimulus to the local economy, but also the biggest employer in Llangollen and the provider of an excellent apprenticeship scheme.

“The Trust is now hoping to generate funds towards the second stage of the extension by asking for donations for limited editions of the traditional type of Edmondson card tickets, specially printed denoting a journey from Llangollen to Plas Bonwn

“For £5 a buff ticket will be issued in respect of drainage work, £10 a red ticket for platform work, £15 a blue ticket for a sleeper and for £20 a vellum ticket for ballast.
“These are already proving popular with visitors and a full set is available for £50 from the Llangollen Railway Trust at sales outlets at the Railway, or by post enclosing a stamped and addressed envelope with remittance to Llangollen Station, LL20 8SN.”
