The figures for plenary contributions, Assembly oral questions and urgent questions for 2009 show that Welsh Conservative regional AM, Mark Isherwood, Shadow Minister for Social Justice and Housing, spoke in more debates and asked more questions in the Assembly last year than each of the 12 other North Wales members - his total contributions for the year stands at 261He is followed by his Welsh Conservative colleague, Clwyd West AM Darren Millar, Shadow Minister for Local Government, who made 247 contributions. In contrast Labour’s Carl Sargeant, AM for Alyn and Deeside, Minister for Social Justice and Local Government, made only 7 contributions in the Assembly Chamber in the 12 month period, although it should be noted he was the Labour Whip and sat in Cabinet.Second lowest was Alun Ffred Jones, Arfon AM, (Plaid Cymru), with only 68 contributions, followed by Labour's Sandy Mewies, AM for Delyn, at 74 and Lesley Griffiths, Wrexham Labour AM, with 118.Labour’s Karen Sinclair, representing Clwyd South, is excluded from the comparison as she was absent from the Chamber due to ill health. The figures include member’s contributions and main business proceedings, oral questions that are called for in the Chamber (tabled and supplementaries), and urgent questions. Interventions and points of order are treated in the same way as full scale speeches. The figures for the North Wales members in descending order are as follows:Mark Isherwood, North Wales Regional AM, (Welsh Conservatives) – 261 Darren Millar, Clwyd West AM, (Welsh Conservatives) – 247Eleanor Burnham, North Wales Regional AM, (Liberal Democrats) - 234 Gareth Jones, Aberconwy AM, (Plaid Cymru) - 191Brynle Williams, North Wales Regional AM, (Welsh Conservatives) - 170Ann Jones, Vale of Clwyd AM, (Labour) - 142Ieuan Wyn Jones, Ynys Mon AM, (Plaid Cymru) – 131Janet Ryder, North Wales Regional AM, (Plaid Cymru), - 123Lesley Griffiths, Wrexham AM, (Labour) - 118Sandy Mewies, Delyn AM, (Labour) - 74Alun Ffred Jones, Arfon AM, (Plaid Cymru) – 68 Carl Sargeant, Alyn and Deeside AM, (Labour) – 7 Karen Sinclair, Clwyd South, (Labour) (absent due to ill health) - 0 Commenting on the figures Mr Isherwood said: “ All Assembly members are elected to represent the people in their constituency or region and are duty bound to do so in the Assembly. Most are busy people with high case loads, many of us chair committees and take an active role in cross party groups and we all have congested diaries. However, this should increase the number of issues an Assembly Member needs to raise with the Welsh Government and other Members, not be an excuse for low activity in other areas."
