AM –HYGIENE CENTRAL TO SCHOOL TOILET TARGETS

AM for Wrexham, Lesley Griffiths, believes new Welsh Government guidelines will set the standard for toilet facilities and hygiene in Welsh schools of the future.
The School Toilets Good Practice document, published this week by the Welsh Government, provides guidance for local authorities on the standards expected by pupils of their toilet facilities.
This includes spreading good practice on improving general toilet facilities while stressing the importance of good hygiene such as hand washing.
The guidance, formed jointly between Local Authorities and the Welsh Government Departments of Health and Education, also takes account of the opinions of pupils on their own school toilet facilities and how they would like to see them improved.
In the main, local authorities provide school toilet facilities across Wales and the Welsh Government expects the new guidance to set the standard for facilities within schools from now on.
AM for Wrexham, Lesley Griffiths commented:
“Many of us beyond a certain age harbour not-so-fond memories when we think back on our experience of school toilet facilities.
“Thankfully those days are gone and the schoolchildren of Wales today deserve better.
“This set of guidelines will let parents and pupils know the standards which they can expect and gives education providers a benchmark for the standards they should provide set by Government.
“This is not only important for the day-to-day comfort and dignity of our schoolchildren , but also has an  important bearing on the standards of hygiene within schools– something at the forefront of every parent’s mind whenever they place their children in someone else’s care.
“This is an area the Welsh Government takes very seriously and I believe parents and pupils in Wrexham and across Wales will welcome this move. “
Welsh Government will monitor progress and ensure improvements are made against the standards set out in the School Toilets Good Practice document.
