The Vale of Llangollen Canal Boat Trust

Llangollen Canal Boat Trust

The Trust was formed in 1983 to raise money to build a narrowboat for disabled and disadvantaged people of all ages. The Trust now has two boats, Millie which is the holiday boat and Glas-y-Dorlan which is our day trip boat.

The boats are run on a voluntary basis apart from the Holiday Skipper and a part-time Office Administrator. Patrons are: David Essex, Aled Jones and Brian Kay

It has long been the practice to make no charge for the boats, however there is a minimum donation for the holiday trips. Regrettably, a charge may be levied on Local Authority and Health authority organisations in some circumstances.

The boats have a hydraulic lift to assist wheelchairs aboard. The toilet and washing facilities are designed for disabled people. Seating can be removed to accommodate wheelchairs and on Millie they can also be adapted ·into bunk beds to provide sleeping accommodation. Windows are large and set low to provide a good, clear view of the canal. Our boats carry a mobile telephone.

Bookings can be made for disabled people of any age. The boats can be booked by groups (schools, clubs, homes, etc.), by families who have a disabled member, or by individuals. Wherever possible bookings will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

For holidays, Millie can take up to 6 people (including helpers). For Half-Day and Day-Trips Glas-y-Dorlan can take up to 12 people (including helpers). The ratio of helpers to disabled people must be determined by those making the booking. It is preferable not to have more than six people in wheelchairs on day trips, or on cruises.

The Trust provides Skippers who are responsible for the safety of the boats and their passengers, as well as for ensuring that the necessary equipment is available for passengers. They are not trained to deal with disabilities.

ALL TRIPS DEPART FROM TREVOR BASIN

We are able to offer a number of trips of varying lengths to suit most requirements. The boats are available for use from 9:30 am. We try to be as flexible as possible in setting the times of departure and return and passengers are asked to allow 30 minutes for boarding prior to departure.

We are able to carry 12 passengers (including helpers) at a time. For groups of up to 24 people (including helpers), trip No. 4 may suit: whilst half go on the boat from Trevor to Llangollen or Gledrid, the remainder could browse around Llangollen or Gledrid and vice versa for the return journey.

Tea, coffee, sugar and milk are provided on Day Trips Only.

PLEASE NOTE: for Glas-y-Dorlan the power supply on board the boat is only 12 volts: ordinary appliances such as shavers, hair dryers, irons, etc. will not work - Millie has facilities to use ordinary appliances such as shavers, hairdryers etc.

All items of equipment on the boat have been kindly donated for the comfort and convenience of passengers. The Trust would be grateful if you would ensure that all equipment is returned at the end of the trip.

FOOD FOR THE JOURNEY: Pubs along the Canal provide bar snacks and meals, and the Booking Officer or Skipper can advise you about these.

SPECIAL CUPS, CUTLERY: passengers should bring any special aids they may require.

HAND AND TEA TOWELS: In the interests of hygiene, passengers are asked to remember to bring their own towels and tea towels with them.

CLOTHING: The boats are centrally heated, but warm clothing should be brought, so that passengers can sit on the foredeck weather permitting. Helpers should bring adequate waterproof clothing, non-slip shoes, etc. Passengers should also bring waterproof clothes, in case they wish to go ashore when it is raining.

SLEEPING: passengers should bring there own sleeping bags and pillows etc...
