STORYHOUSE - MOONLIGHT FLICKS - Cheshire’s most magical moonlit movie season 5th July – 27th August 2016
Moonlight Flicks is now a permanent fixture in Chester’s summer, back this year from 5th July – 27th August.
Grab a deckchair and enjoy some of the best films out, wirelessly under the stars, in the shadow of the city’s Roman ruins, with your friends. Bring your own drink, and order pizzas to be delivered during the show.
Moonlight Flicks just keeps getting bigger! We've partnered with Film Hub Wales and Chapter to be part of Roald Dahl on Film, a major season taking place across nearly 50 other locations in the UK.
To celebrate the most magnificent Welsh storyteller, three films inspired by Dahl's children's books have been added to our open air cinema schedule, so grab a deckchair and join us under the stars this summer.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (U)
Charlie Bucket wins a golden ticket to tour a local chocolate factory with its eccentric owner. Gene Wilder stars in this delightful version of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Pure imagination!

The best date night for families and friends, bar none.
5th July – 26th August.
Moonlight Flicks tickets are priced from £8.50 (£7.50 concessions), and as with all Storyhouse events, a child under 12 can go free with a full paying adult (films rated PG and U only).
Gates open half an hour before start time and cushions, blankets and chairs are available to hire, pizza to order.
Here are a few Frequently Asked Questions that should help you with any queries.
What time does the film start?
To ensure the best experience of the screening, the start times of this year’s films coincide with dusk (customers may notice that the start time gets earlier as late summer arrives and the nights set in earlier). Gates open half an hour before the start time, which is fifteen minutes earlier to ensure everyone is seated and comfortable. From that time the film will be started when the sun goes down.
How much are the tickets?
Advance tickets can be booked at £8.50 (£7.50 concessions) per ticket, or on the day at £9.50 (£8.50 concessions).
Children aged Under 12 can go free (1 per Full Price adult), with additional children, anyone Under 20 or Students entitled to the concession price.
Groups can receive either 10% off for a party of 10 or more, or 15% off for a group of 25+, all of which are bookable online.
How can I book tickets?
Tickets can be booked using the safe and secure online booking system, where you won’t be charged booking or transaction fees. When you have completed your booking, you will receive your confirmation e-mail which acts as your ticket. This can simply be printed off or displayed on your phone or device when you arrive at the screening.
Pending availability, tickets can be bought on the door, although it is best to check we have tickets in advance. You can also book tickets in the Chester Visitor Information Centre.
Where do the screenings take place?
For 2016, Moonlight Flicks will return to Chester’s Roman Gardens, with more venues to be announced soon.
Where do I sit?
The cinema has no set seating plan and film fans are encouraged to bring their own seating – deckchairs, cushions, picnic rugs or something similar.
Some deckchairs are available for hire on the night at £4. You can also hire cushions and blankets (£2.50 each).
Please note: there are no facilities to take card payments, so remember to bring some change!
Will I need ID?
Possibly. All our films have different classifications (PG, 12A, 15, 18 etc.) so if you look younger than the film’s certificate, you will be asked to prove your age. If you claim a Student ticket you will also need to show your NUS Card, so it’s best to bring some ID with you.
What about the weather?
Come prepared – the trick is layers! It will get chilly once the sun goes down so you’ll be grateful for a warm jumper, cosy cardigan or even a blanket.
Weather updates will be posted regularly on this site. Please note: the page is updated as much as possible – if there is no mention to the contrary, please presume the screening is going ahead as scheduled.
If a film is cancelled or stopped a screening due to adverse weather, you’ll be able to get a refund or exchange your tickets for another night.
I can no longer make it, can I get a refund/exchange my tickets?
Yes, you can receive a ticket exchange for another screening (depending on availability). To organise your ticket exchange, please contact the office on 01244 409 113.
Please note: Refunds and exchanges must be requested no later than 7 days before the screening.
Can I bring my children?
Of course, provided they meet the age rating of the film you’re coming to see (for example PG or U). Children under the age of 12 are entitled to free tickets (1 free ticket for each full price ticket).
It can be noisy outdoors, how do I hear what’s going on?
All Moonlight Flicks screenings are ‘silent’ – you will be given a set of headphones on the way in, which will allow you to hear the film. Not only does this not disturb our neighbours, it also means you won’t be distracted by background noise such as talking or crisp-rustling.
Can I still see the film if I arrive late?
Yes, our stewards will help you sneak in!
Can children go unaccompanied?
All under 12s must be accompanied by an adult. The accompanying adult must be over 18.
Can I bring food & drink?
Yes – you can bring your own food and drink to the film including alcohol.
Every year for Moonlight Flicks we partner with local bars and restaurants, offering film-goers special discounts. Be sure to check our Food & Drink page closer to the time for the latest offers.
Are the venues accessible for wheelchair users?
Yes – all the venues are fully wheelchair accessible. If you have any concerns please contact the office on 01244 409 113.
