The Chester Orchestral Society was formed in 1884. The Society's performing arm is the Chester Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) which is recognised as one of the leading non-professional orchestras in the North West. As well as principals from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestras, internationally famous artists who have appeared with the CPO in recent years include Peter Donohoe, Julian Lloyd-Webber, Margaret Cable, Jack Brymer, Martin Roscoe, John Wilbraham and David Pyatt. The CPO has a long association with, and provides a platform for, award winning conductors and soloists from the Royal Northern College of Music. They particularly enjoy working with these young musicians.
