This Winter, A Lion At Chester Little Theatre The play is set in Chinon Castle, at Christmas in 1183. We see the Plantagenets, one of the most influential and most feuding familes in history, at war over Henry II’s successor. Where modern families squabble over Monopoly, the Aquitaines play an acrimonious game of thrones. The ageing but still vital Henry has three living sons (brought to life here by two veterans of the Little Theatre stage, and a very welcome newcomer). He has one son in mind to don the mantle of power after his demise, but his estranged (and usually imprisoned)wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has other ideas. The beautiful and imperious Eleanor is played in this production by Hilary Egan, who won Best Supporting Actress in last year’s Cheshire Theatre Guild Awards for her portrayal of another haughty mother in Separate Tables. Eleanor’s rival for Henry’s affections is the young woman the king & queen brought up and hoped to marry to one of their sons! The stage is set for plotting and scheming, with the audience enjoying laughs, tears, fantastic costumes, and some of the best amateur acting in the region. The play starts each night at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7.50 (£6.00 concessions Mon & Tues). All tickets can be purchased by calling 01244 322674. Advance booking is strongly advised, as the club’s shows often sell out early. Since 1944, Chester Little Theatre has generally staged 5 or 6 full-length plays each year, and currently own the city’s only fully operational theatre space. With a fine tradition of costume drama, including the award-winning A Doll’s House, they are proud to boast a raked auditorium seating 126 people, an adaptable stage with full technical facilities, and a large wardrobe of costumes from all periods. Tucked within the residential area of Newtown, The Little Theatre really is one of Chester's hidden gems. More information on Chester Theatre Club is available online at www.chestertheatreclub.co.uk
