ELWYN
A Wales Theatre Company / Aberystwyth Arts Centre co-production

A hilarious tale of survival in the modern world, starring Russell Gomer and Ieuan Rhys.

Directed and adapted by Michael Bogdanov.

40 something Mummy’s boy Elwyn (Russell Gomer) and his room-mate, uncouth reluctant virgin Kelly (Ieuan Rhys), are the Odd Couple of the Valleys: a pair of confused souls taking their first steps in the outside world, after years of isolated life in a mental health institution. Given at last an apartment by social services, their mission is to re-assimilate themselves into society - it’s either that or a return to the asylum. All they have to do is convince their social worker that they really are ‘normal’, even if it does feel safer sleeping in a wardrobe…
Elwyn charts the bumps and stumbles as they make their way back into a world we take for granted.  Humorously touching and heart-warmingly funny, join Elwyn and Kelly as they build new friendships, become accustomed to all things ordinary and start to experience the pleasure of the everyday.

Based on the cult Oscar nominated Norwegian film Elling, derived from the novel ‘Blood Brothers’ by Ingvar Ambjørnsen.
A version of ‘Elling’ received an Olivier Nomination and a Stage Award for the best Comedy 2007

‘This is the most blissfully funny and touching evening I’ve had in the theatre for ages’ – The Guardian

THE HUNGER GAMES (12A)
Running Time: 142 min
Director: Gary Ross
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games.
A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.
Pitted against highly trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

GISELLE
Music Adolphe Adam

Innocent love and betrayal, madness and the supernatural; Giselle is the ultimate Romantic ballet. This is the haunting legend of a young peasant girl, Giselle, who is charmed by the handsome Count Albrecht. When she discovers that Albrecht has deceived her, the heartbroken Giselle is driven to madness and death, but even the grave offers her no peace…

Vienna Festival Ballet’s traditional staging of the 1841 production takes us from the bright, sunny optimism of the village to a ghostly world of mystery and menace. Here, in a mist-wreathed forest glade, the restless spirits of abandoned brides force men who cross their path to dance to their death. Will Giselle’s love for Albrecht protect him from their vengeance and a tragic fate?

Dir: Asghar Farhadi
Country: Iran, Rest of the world
Year: 2011
Running time: 122mins
Language: Persian with English subtitles
Cast: Leila Hatami, Peyman Moaadi, Sareh Bayat, Sarina Farhadi

WINNER of the Oscar 2012 for Best Film in A Foreign Language, the stand out film of the 2011 Berlin Film Festival and winner of the Golden Bear, A SEPARATION is a suspenseful and intelligent drama detailing the fractures and tensions at the heart of Iranian society.

Written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, the film boasts a range of superb performances from the ensemble cast who collectively received the Silver Bears for both Best Actor and Best Actress at the Berlinale.

The compelling narrative is driven by a taut and finely written script rooted in the particular of Iranian society but which transcends its setting to create a stunning morality play with universal resonance.

When his wife (Leila Hatami) leaves him, Nader (Peyman Moadi) hires a young woman (Sareh Bayat) to take care of his suffering father (Ali-Asghar Shahbazi). But he doesn’t know his new maid is not only pregnant, but also working without her unstable husband’s (Shahab Hosseini) permission.

Soon, Nader finds himself entangled in a web of lies manipulation and public confrontations.

“With great power and subtlety, Farhadi transforms this ugly quarrel into a contemporary tragedy.” THE GUARDIAN

ALLAN YN Y FAN
Steam Pie Presents: Allan Yn Y Fan - PWNCO TOUR

Allan Yn Y Fan is a multi-instrumental and vocal quintet as famed now for “their beautiful vocals” as for their “fiery instrumentals.”  On this tour Allan Yn Y Fan will be playing a selection of songs and tunes which make up their brand new album “Pwnco”.
This concert will feature the band’s interpretations of some further gems from the Welsh storehouse of traditional music and song along with a number of the band’s own compositions.  The title of this tour and the album comes from a new tune interpolated into one of the key songs on the album “Canu Cwnsela” which relates to the battle of wits played out within the Mari Lwyd tradition designed to reward the players with food and drink.

Allan Yn Y Fan will reward their audiences with a concert that will range from contemplative and moving songs of life and love to uproarious selections of jigs, reels and polkas.

“The most sensitive and experienced of Welsh bands…….the rate at which Allan Yn Y Fan has gone from being just another instrumental Celtic outfit to front-runners is nothing short of astonishing”  Simon Jones fROOTS magazine June 2011

SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN (12A)
Running time: 107mins
Director: Lasse Hallstrom
Cast: Ewan McGregor; Emily Blunt;Kristin Scott Thomas; Amr Waked
A romantic, contemporary fable, SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN is the tale of government employee Dr Alfred, or Fred, Jones (Ewan McGregor), a rather introverted scientist at the Department of Fisheries and Agriculture. Trudging along in his day job, with his marriage stagnating, his world is suddenly thrown into turmoil when he‘s drawn into a scheme hatched by a fly fishing–obsessed Yemeni Sheikh (Amr Waked) who dreams of achieving the seemingly impossible – introducing salmon to the wadis of the Yemen.
When the British government, desperate for a good news story in the area, gets wind of the Sheikh‘s plan, the Prime Minister‘s fearsome spokesperson, Patricia Maxwell (Kristin Scott Thomas), seizes on the idea – it‘s a good news story that will deflect attention away from the government‘s latest blunder. She appoints Fred to oversee the project, which pleases him not at all. For a logical, rather stuffy scientist like Fred, the idea of introducing salmon to the Yemen is one step short of madness.
Fred, however, is eventually won over by the charismatic Sheikh and his mystical worldview, while he also begins to fall for the Sheikh‘s representative, Harriet Chetwode–Talbot (Emily Blunt), a gentle and engaging English beauty who joins on him his journey into the Yemen. When Fred is drawn into helping Harriet try and fix the troubles in her life, he learns to cast off his deep–set cynicism. With Harriet‘s encouragement and support, Fred then rises to the Sheikh‘s eccentric challenge, and embarks upon a journey of self–discovery and late–blooming love.

‘Theatr Colwyn – the UK’s oldest operating cinema’

It was more than 126 years ago that the venue now known as Theatr Colwyn first opened its doors to the public.

Back in the 1880s, it was then called a Public Hall – as the stone plaque at the top of the building still testifies – but it’s uses were many, just as they are today – a place of entertainment, for discussions, dances and fundraising events.

We are pleased to announce that recent investigations in public archives revealed the venue is now the UK’s oldest operating cinema.

The first screenings took place in January, 1909, when the building was run by the entrepreneur Harry Reynolds.

Time, taste and technology have all taken giant leaps since then, but the venue and its small group of staff, volunteers and supporters, led by manager Phil Batty, still operate at the very heart of the community, as those in charge of the venue did all those years ago.

Theatr Colwyn is a receiving theatre, seating 329 people (including wheelchair spaces) and hosts a wide variety of performances ranging from dance and drama to rock music concerts, Welsh language shows and a very popular Christmas pantomime.

It has a thriving cinema audience who enjoy not only the latest blockbuster releases on the big screen, but also independent, classic and foreign language films, courtesy of the Rialto Film Night.

The venue is available to hire (please contact Phil Batty for rates), as is the newly installed recording studio and rehearsal room. A bar selling alcohol and soft beverages is available before and during the interval at most live performances.

We are privileged to have Terry Jones as our patron, the Colwyn Bay-born Monty Python, actor, writer and director.
