| Chester Cathedral Education Department wins national award | | Print | |
![]() The Education Team at Chester Cathedral has recently been awarded the prestigious Sandford Award by the Heritage Education Trust. The award lasts five years and the Education Department is delighted to be honoured for a third time having previously received it in 1999 and 2004. The award recognises quality and excellence in the educational services and facilities at a site which is not itself a school, or college, but which has an education department. Entrants are assessed by a panel of independent judges including OFSTED Inspectors, former head teachers, education consultants and heritage property based education officers. A judge from the trust spent a day with the Cathedral’s Education Team in June. The scheme currently encompasses 200 historic sites including historic houses, museums, galleries, cathedrals, places of worship, gardens, landscapes and historic artefacts. Claire Chatterton, the Cathedral’s Education Officer will collect the award at a national presentation ceremony later this year. Canon Trevor Dennis, the Vice Dean of the Cathedral said “This is the third time the Cathedral has won this award for the work of its Education Department. We are delighted for Claire and her team of highly trained volunteers, and most warmly congratulate them. Claire and her guides consistently get rave reviews from the teachers and group leaders who come to the Cathedral, whether they come with nursery children, primary or secondary school pupils, or university students. It has been very heartening to see how Claire and the team have recently expanded their work by welcoming non-school groups, such as Young Archaeologists, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers (and there are plans for Guides and Brownies, too), and by organising holiday sessions in the Cathedral for families. The award is richly deserved" Contact: Nicholas Fry, 12 Abbey Square, CHESTER, CH1 2 HU Tel: 01244 500958 E-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
