Auditions are now open for the production of ART.
New members are very welcome!
The director, Lisa Miller, says:
Serge has bought a painting – it’s a five by four off white canvass with a few diagonal lines torn into it. Marc thinks he is insane and Yvan can’t quite make up his mind what to think. This is the deceptively simple premise of Yazmina Reza’s play ‘ART’. Naturally there is far more to it than a mere argument over tastes in wall decoration. For Marc, Serge’s purchase of the painting is a betrayal. Serge has stepped outside the parameters of their shared tastes, culture and class and has bought an object that re-defines him as the type of person Marc doesn’t understand. Or like. Serge is on the defensive and Yvan is on the fence – to the irritation of all. Cue a middle aged, middle classed male meltdown.
There are three male, roughly equal roles in this shorter than average play. They are as follows:
Serge (35-65) A professional, successful male. Divorced. Reads Seneca (in earnest). Likes theatre and dining out. Plenty of disposable income which is spent on furnishing his tasteful bachelor pad and a burgeoning passion for fine art.
Marc (35-65) A similarly successful male. Married to Paula. He is more traditional than Serge in many ways. Cynical, unpretentious, scared of change and slightly nervy. It is his extreme reaction to Serge’s purchase of the painting that drives the play. Does a lot of nervous eating. A penchant for nuts would be useful.
Yvan ( 25-45) Younger than the other two but cut from the same cloth. Not as successful professionally having recently taken up a lowly paid job in the stationery business. The first time we see him he is on his knees looking for a missing pen top. He stays there for some time. He is engaged to a ‘Gorgon’ and is at the mercy of both this Gorgon and her mother. He has a splendid three page rant in the middle of the play which could prove very cathartic to deliver.
The production is from Saturday, 30th June to Saturday, 7th July. Rehearsals will start on Monday, 14th May.
