Rhino Mania arrives at Chester Zoo

 5 July - 12 September 2010

Follow the Rhino Mania trail to Chester Zoo and meet Splodge and Ecko, Chester Zoo’s newest rhinos!

 Both rhinos are at the main gate of Chester Zoo, greeting visitors as they arrive. Come and say hello to them and don’t forget you can also visit Chester Zoo’s real rhinos as well. Chester Zoo currently has nine Black Rhinos, including two calves.

Coronation Street’s Ryan Thomas (Jason Grimshaw) and Emmerdale’s Adam Thomas (Adam Barton) have already visited Splodge in his new home.

Ecko was designed exclusively for Chester Zoo by American artist and entrepreneur, Marc Ecko.

Marc is an avid supporter of rhino conservation and has a life long passion for, and commitment to, protecting the magnificent species.

At the end of Rhino Mania, many of the rhinos will be auctioned and proceeds given to the Hospice of the Good Sheppard and Chester Zoo’s Black Rhino Field Conservation Project in Kenya and Tanzania

Run for the Wild

RUNNERS will be leading the charge as they raise money for conservation. Chester Zoo will be hosting its first Run for the Wild event on 26th September

 Taking place on 26th September at 8.30am, Run for the Wild is a 5k fundraising event, taking runners and walkers through the grounds of the UK’s No.1 Zoo and helping to raise vital funds for field conservation around the globe.

All money raised will be donated to the Zoo’s Eastern Black Rhino conservation programme, which helps to support projects in Kenya and Tanzania.  Event entry fee is £10 for adults and £5 for children.  Participants pledge to raise a minimum sponsorship amount of £20 per adult and £10 per child. 

As a thank you, adults will receive a complimentary ticket to visit the Zoo, whilst the kids will get their very own cuddly rhino.

Vets at Chester Zoo

Enjoy a peek behind the scenes at our new free exhibition

 

The exhibit, which is in the Joseph Banks Room opens its doors on Friday 28th May and is open to anyone visiting the Zoo.  Visitors can see high tech equipment used to diagnose, treat and care for the Zoo’s 7000 animals.

Members of the public can talk to one of the Education staff in the exhibit, read about real life case studies, learn how to tell if an elephant is pregnant, how to take a tiger’s temperature and hear why the Zoo’s Animal Health Centre examines nearly 2000 poo samples a year.

The interactive exhibit boasts many visual displays such as a thermal imaging camera, sounds of real animals’ heartbeats and a short film about the vets.

Steve Unwin, Veterinary Officer at Chester Zoo, said: “our in-house vet team delivers preventative health measures to ensure our different animal species stay healthy.  This exhibit is a fantastic way of allowing our visitors an insight into our role within one of the biggest zoos in the UK. “Our endocrinologist, nutritionist and vet team all work closely together with experts within the Zoo and across the world to help the Zoo’s mission to protect and conserve biodiversity.”

Chester Zoo is one of a few UK zoos to have an in-house endocrinologist which helps with the animals’ welfare and reproduction by keeping a check on changes in hormone levels.
