Cheshire Tortoise DaySaturday, May 19th
This day is not a Chester Zoo event, but hosted by our friends at the British Chelonia Group (BCG). The BCG promotes the welfare, care and conservation of tortoises, terrapins and turtles worldwide.
This will be the eleventh Tortoise Day event to promote the welfare, care and conservation of tortoises, terrapins and turtles worldwide.
The venue is The Village Hall, Wilmslow Old Road, Mottram St. Andrew ( near Alderley Edge), Cheshire SK10 4QP.
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Free parking and wheelchair access available. Entrance charge £2. Free for children.
The aim of the day is to enable tortoise enthusiasts to meet and share information. Experts will be on hand to offer help and advice. Everyone welcome: tortoise owners, reptile professionals and vets. If you do not own a tortoise, there is always plenty to entertain the family with children’s activities, raffle and tombola.
The British Cactus & Succulent Society (Macclesfield Branch) will have cacti for sale and offer hints and tips on growing these fascinating plants. Other stands will sell plants, fossils and minerals from Shark Teeth Ltd, quality hand crafted artwork and gifts, plus tortoise related items.
On display will be Dookies ferret rescue, tortoise food identification and live tortoise species (not for sale). Chelonia literature will be available plus free information and care sheets.
The Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic, Ashleigh Veterinary Centre in Manchester will be participating throughout the event. Light refreshments available all day. In the afternoon there will be a special digital presentation ‘Caring for your Tortoise’. Funds go towards chelonian conservation projects worldwide.

Members' Talk - Zoo History Wednesday, May 9th Join us for a look at how Chester Zoo influenced zoo development worldwide in the 60s and 70s, presented by Stephen McKeown.
One of the joys of managing the zoo’s archives is that just when you think you’re on top of it all, someone finds a box in the attic and a whole new batch of material comes to light.
Since we last had a zoo history talk we’ve been busy ploughing through some twelve archive boxes of George Mottershead’s correspondence with other zoos, have discovered maps and papers relating to the zoo’s post-war land acquisitions and, courtesy of George Mottershead’s daughter June, a magazine from 1930 with a two page spread on the Oakfield Zoological Gardens.
This was the collection started by George Mottershead in Shavington, the success of which led to the creation of Chester Zoo a year later.
So, lots of new information to share with a particular emphasis on Chester Zoo’s role in the wider zoo world and a rare chance to look at some of our recently restored original documentation in an archive display.
Stephen McKeown is Chester Zoo’s Head of Discovery and Learning
